Android 17: Everything You Need to Know Features, Release Date, Supported Devices & News

With Android 17 Beta 3, the change is now live, though it remains to be seen if it will persist till the stable release. With Android 12, Google combined the two toggles into a singular Internet tile. Before Android 12, the OS had separate Quick Settings toggles for Wi-Fi and mobile data.

Features

If you’d like to try the changes ahead of its stable rollout, you can already do so, starting with Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1. As such, we’re labeling these features as “carry over features” as they technically went live with Android 16, but will most likely reach the wider Android platform with Android 17. These features are live on Pixel phones running Android 16, but Android OEMs could adopt them as part of the Android 17 platform update. Google added features to Android 16 after the initial stable release, primarily through the Android 16 QPR1, QPR2, and QPR3 releases.

As a result, we have a list of features that are coming to upcoming Android 16 QPR releases for Pixel devices, which are also likely to be added to the next Android platform update, Android 17. A close look at an official screenshot (seen above) shows a menu displaying Play Protect status, bootloader status, and build number info. This will detect apps that hide or change their icons and then launch from the background or abuse accessibility permissions.

Customizable keyboard shortcuts

• With the advent of the Google Pixel line of devices, Google itself has also made specific Android features timed or permanent exclusives to the Pixel series.
• To support these “Registered App Stores,” Google is working on core changes to the Android operating system.
• This button is slated to receive “special visual treatment,” possibly indicating a custom animation when it appears or is tapped.
• With Android 17 Beta 2, Google is expanding its SMS OTP protection by automatically delaying access to SMS messages with OTP for apps that aren’t the intended recipient or the default SMS handler app.
• The only Android release which was not immediately made available as source code was the tablet-only 3.0 Honeycomb release.
• With these changes, Google can add new system functions and update apps without having to distribute an upgrade to the operating system itself.

Alternatively, a permission might be listed in the app manifest as required (as opposed to optional) and the app would not install unless user grants the permission; users can withdraw any, even required, permissions from any app in the device settings after app installation, but few users do this. In Android 6.0 “Marshmallow”, the permissions system was changed; apps are no longer automatically granted all of their specified permissions at installation time. Once you’ve installed a beta build, you’ll automatically get future updates over-the-air for all later previews and Betas. In addition to these changes, Terminal also gets a dedicated full-screen button that hides the navigation and status bars.

Additionally, the menu acts as a direct gateway to Google Family Link, allowing quick access to broader controls like School Time, purchase approvals, and location alerts. As you can see in the video above, lock screen widgets on phones work differently from those on tablets. Instead of presenting every setting in a single vertical list, Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 separates them by category. Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 cleans up the Sound & vibration submenu within the Settings app. Once enabled, you won’t see any blur in the Quick Settings panel, the notification shade, the lock screen, the app drawer, or the Recents menu.

• Google engineer Patrick Brady once stated in the company’s developer conference that “Android is not Linux”, with Computerworld adding that “Let me make it simple for you, without Linux, there is no Android”.
• Google responded that the tool, especially its initial release, was intended as a sample framework for developers to modify and build upon depending on their needs, not as a finished piracy solution.
• This will detect apps that hide or change their icons and then launch from the background or abuse accessibility permissions.
• This process should work in reverse, provided Google implements a background clipboard listener on Android PCs.
